Listening Map Labelling: How to Stay Calm When the Diagram Moves Fast
Map and plan questions look scary, but they follow patterns. Use these steps to reduce mistakes under time pressure.
Map labelling is not a vocabulary test—it is an attention test. The audio will distract you with extra landmarks. Your job is to anchor early and track movement verbs.
Pre-label the map in 30 seconds
Notice directions (north, left/right) and already-named locations. Predict what could be missing: entrance, bridge, gate, path.
Listen for sequencing language
Words like “next,” “after that,” “just beyond,” and “opposite” often signal the answer order. Write abbreviations quickly; you can expand later.
Do not fight a missed answer
If you miss one label, move on. Chasing a lost item often causes two more misses.
Pair this drill routine with weekly mock tests. In IELTS preparation programs in Nepal, consistency beats occasional “marathon” study sessions.
